Everything else in this catalogue is steel, and steel is heavy in both directions — heavy to hold the flag down, heavier to freight. Water solves that: the ballast ships as an empty shell and is filled on site from a tap or a hose.
Two different problems call for two different products:
- A water-fill base is a blow-moulded shell that the flagpole stands in. It is the ballast and the base at once.
- A water bag is a flat PVC weight that sits on the legs of a cross base or over the feet of a stand. It weighs the base you already own.

Why the empty weight is the number that matters
The 10 kg water bag weighs 180 g empty and the 7 kg screw-cap bag weighs 130 g. That ratio is the entire commercial case: 100 filled bags would be a tonne, and 100 empty bags are a carton one person can carry. For anyone shipping by air, or stocking a promotional fleet that gets handed out at events, this is the difference between viable and not.
Where water ballast is the right call
- No steel permitted on site — indoor venues, sports halls, exhibition halls with floor-loading rules
- Freight cost dominates — long-haul and air shipments
- The layout changes — empty the base, move it, refill
- A cross base needs more weight than its own — a water bag on the legs is cheaper than a heavier base
Where it is the wrong call
Water is a poor ground anchor on soft ground — a filled base on grass will sink and settle. It is also the wrong answer where the site has no water supply at set-up, or where a base left filled will freeze.
